Four Core Literacy Domains

Information & Ideas

Understand, infer, and use evidence

Why it matters: Helps you identify central ideas, interpret details and graphics, draw logical inferences, and choose evidence that supports a conclusion.

Example

After reading a short study about sleep and memory, decide which finding from a table best supports the researchers' conclusion.

Craft & Structure

Analyze words, purpose, and connections

Why it matters: Builds academic vocabulary and helps you recognize an author's purpose, understand how a text is organized, and compare related texts.

Example

Use the surrounding sentences to determine what the word “sustain” most nearly means in a passage about renewable energy.

Expression of Ideas

Revise writing for clarity and purpose

Why it matters: Teaches you to organize information logically, use effective transitions, and select details that accomplish a specific writing goal.

Example

Choose the transition—such as “however,” “therefore,” or “for example”—that best shows the relationship between two ideas.

Standard English Conventions

Edit grammar, usage, and punctuation

Why it matters: Accurate sentence structure and punctuation make writing clear and are essential in academic and professional communication.

Example

Select whether a sentence needs a comma, semicolon, colon, or no punctuation between two related clauses.

Four Core Mathematics Domains

Algebra

Work confidently with linear relationships

Why it matters: Linear equations, inequalities, functions, and systems are foundations for higher mathematics and real-world quantitative reasoning.

Example

If 3x + 7 = 25, solve for x. Answer: x = 6

Advanced Math

Analyze nonlinear equations and functions

Why it matters: Builds the skills needed for quadratic, exponential, polynomial, and other nonlinear problems commonly used in college-level mathematics.

Example

Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0. Answer: x = 2 or x = 3

Problem-Solving & Data Analysis

Use ratios, percentages, and data

Why it matters: Helps you interpret tables and statistics, reason with units and rates, and solve practical problems using proportional relationships.

Example

A ₱2,000 item is discounted by 15%. Find the sale price. Answer: ₱1,700

Geometry & Trigonometry

Reason with shapes, angles, and triangles

Why it matters: Spatial reasoning and geometric relationships help you solve problems involving area, volume, circles, right triangles, and trigonometric ratios.

Example

A right triangle has legs of 6 and 8. Find the hypotenuse. Answer: 10

Understanding Your SAT Score

Your total SAT score is the sum of your Reading & Writing score and your Math score. Each section is scored from 200–800, producing a total score from 400–1600.
